Blacklisted but Not in Seoul: Why Kanye Still Has a Stage in Korea

Ye’s banned everywhere but booked in Korea. Bianca showed up covered in black, and Kanye brought the drama. Let’s talk fan loyalty, selective outrage, and why Seoul keeps saying yes.

The controversial rapper Ye (although everyone still refers to him as ‘Kanye West’ 🙂‍↔️) landed at Gimpo Airport with his wife Bianca Censori on the night of July 25. He arrived just a day before his concert, which is set to be held on July 26 at Incheon Munhak Stadium.

As one might have expect, all eyes were on Bianca Censori to see what she’d be wearing. Dispatch, Korea’s lightning-fast celeb gossip media outlet, shared photos of the couple exiting immigration.

Bianca appeared in front of the camera donning an all-black look — minus her cap. She wore a loose-fitting, diagonally cropped long sleeve top, a black bodysuit, and black leggings. It’s unclear if the feathery part was part of her boots or connected to the leggings. She wore black shades and kept her mouth covered. In other photos, she’s also looking down.

Basically, she’s covered head-to-toe in black — no skin exposed. Which is ironic, considering that half the time she’s photographed, she’s basically naked. I don’t know where fans (or just people in general) stand on this, but there will be those who are relieved… and those who are disappointed. I know where I stand. RELIEF. 🤭 More photos are up on Dispatch.

Will He Meet Fans’ Expectations?

I did a mini-research dive: Ye is largely blacklisted worldwide, except in China and Korea. He was originally scheduled to headline Rubicon Concert (July 18–20), but canceled last minute after a petition demanded his removal.

So he pivoted to Asia — and only China and South Korea accepted him. According to this article, fans in China were already frustrated. He arrived 40 minutes late and dealt with technical issues that affected the performance.

Hopefully he does do a better job in Korea. After all, who’s gonna accept an already controversial guy, who’s not going to show up properly and do a terrible job at performing? 🙄

The Thing with Ye and South Korea…

Here’s something I didn’t know: Ye was actually supposed to perform in Korea back in May. But that got canceled when he dropped a song praising Hitler.

Now it’s July, and here he is again.

So why is Korea so accepting of Kanye? I have two theories.

– Cultural Distance Make a Difference

First — and this may upset some people — Korea just isn’t as attuned to anti-semitic remarks as the West is. Yes, we’re educated about the atrocities of Hitler. But the reality is, Korea has no sizable Jewish population. That means we aren’t constantly reminded of anti-semitism in daily life, so it doesn’t always register as urgently.

It’s similar to how Koreans react strongly to the Rising Sun flag, given Japan’s colonial history here. When we express that outrage, many in the West either is unaware or don’t fully get it — because it’s not part of their lived experience.

In that same way, Koreans might view Kanye’s antisemitic controversies as distant — offensive, yes, but not something that directly affects their community. For most, he’s just a wild, chaotic, “genius” artist.

– When Ye Placed Nice with Korea

The second theory? Korea has a soft spot for Kanye — or at least his presence here has left a lasting impression.

In 2010, he was spotted at a small beef BBQ joint in the countryside with his crew — all of them wearing suits, sitting cross-legged, donning pink aprons. There wasn’t even alcohol on the table. It was so awkward and iconic, it became a fan memory. (Plus he was there with Virgil Abloh!! 😲Rest in Peace…🥲)

In 2024, what was supposed to be a private listening party became a full 2-hour live concert — the first time in years that he performed live. Fans were floored. They felt like they got special treatment. Then he extended his stay way past his original schedule. He reportedley shopped for toys with North West and downed five blueberry smoothies from a local juice franchise. People joked that he might never leave. (Spoiler: he did 😅)

👩🏻🍵 Final Thoughts:

FYI: I in no way condone his antics- not one bit. But that’s just how it’s perceived in Korea. Whether he’s here for the money or genuinely loves Korea, who knows. All I’ll say is: if any countrys still willing to pay to see him perform, he better not mess it up. 🤨
