A new milestone for “KPop Demon Hunters”, “Maybe Happy Ending“’s casting controversy, and live performances that bring the heat — Hot Tea & Cold Takes for the week of August 4!

As weeks go by, there are more things to celebrate for Netflix’s hottest animation movie “K-pop Demon Hunters” as it just hit a massive milestone! It’s now officially the most watched animation of all time on the platform! 🥳🔥

On July 30, Netflix casually dropped the mic: “KPop Demon Hunters” just racked up 130 million views worldwide. The previous record-holder? 2023’s “Leo” with a measly 96 million.

Translation: HUNTR/X didn’t just break the record — they stomped on it in glittery platform boots. 🤯🔥

Since its June 20 release, “KPop Demon Hunters” has been dominating screens and charts alike — from Billboard hits to breaking streaming records. It’s clear this K-pop and Korean culture-infused animation is a global summer sensation.

All eyes are now on Netflix to see what’s next: rumors of sequels, musicals, and even live-action adaptations are swirling. I’m here for every bit of it! 👀

👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s Thoughts:

IIt’s wild to think back to when Korea was basically invisible on the global stage. Now? K-pop and Korean culture are mainstream royalty, and KPop Demon Hunters is living proof this wave isn’t just a moment — it’s a movement. Rumors of sequels and live-action? I’m already prepping the popcorn. 🍿 But I’m all ears and eyes for what Netflix will have in store for us! 👀👂🏻

2) IZNA and TWICE: Lighting Up the Stage — And the Internet Drama

Two K-Pop groups are keeping the buzz going with their “KPop Demon Hunters” performances.🫨

At KCON LA 2025, rookie K-pop girl group IZNA performed Netflix’s mega-hit song “Golden” at Crypto.com Arena on August 1.

While many fans loved the energetic performances of Jeemin, Jungeun and Koko, the performance also sparked controversy after some noticed the group appeared to be lip-syncing. 😬

Meanwhile over in Chicago, TWICE crushed it at Lollapalooza. According to news report, TWICE performed 21 songs live non-stop with choreography before the event shut down their microphone! 😂 Talk about DEDICATION!! 🙌🏻

Jihyo, Jungyeon and Chaeyoung wowed the crowd with their live performance of hit song ‘Takedown’ from Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters”. With many fans seemingly satisfied, it seems like the trio was successful at sealing the Honmoon after all. 🤭

👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s Thoughts”

I knew this kind of drama was coming when rumors about a live-action K-Pop Demon Hunters started swirling. Fans don’t just want to see HUNTR/X come to life — they want performers who look like them, dance with their energy, and sing powerfully. A half-hearted or lip-synced performance? Totally inexcusable. (And don’t forget — these performers will have to be solid actors too.) Honestly? I’m praying Netflix never brings HUNTR/X into live-action. 🙏🏻 🙏🏻

On the other hand, I’ve seen so many comments from netizens praising TWICE’s exceptional performance. Their performance is comparably exceptional to other girl groups performing these days. 😏 (Not mentioning names but some groups come to mind…)

3) “Maybe Happy Ending”‘s Not So Happy Casting News

Broadway 2025’s darling “Maybe Happy Ending” is not in a happy situation as it faces backlash for its casting choice.

The South Korean musical made waves when it won 6 out of the 10 awards that it was nominated for in the 78th Tony Awards. Not only that, but the musical was also praised for its pre-dominant Asian-American cast. Notably, Filipino-American actor Darren Criss became the first Asian-American to win an award for the ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical’.

The mood around the musical took a sudden turn when it announced the decision to cast non-Asian actor Andrew Bart Feldman as the successor of Darren Criss. Many Asian actors including BD Wong and Asian American advocacy groups voiced their disapproval. In response, both the creators and lead actress Helen J. Shen have spoke out but it looks like Feldman isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s Thoughts:

I get it. Asian stories and talent deserve the spotlight, especially when the show was promoted as an Asian musical. The shock and disappointment are real. But here’s the twist — the characters are robots, which makes ethnicity less straightforward. Maybe Feldman really is the perfect fit?

For now, I’m keeping an open mind and reserving judgment until I see him perform. This one’s a complicated mix of representation, art, and casting realities.
