This Week’s Highlights:
- Suga is the last member to join BTS as He Quietly Finishes Military Service
- Kpop Demon Hunter Slays Netflix Charts (in a GOOD way 🥳)
- Harold & Kumar 4 in Development with Possible Return of John Cho & Kal Penn?
1️⃣ BTS is Ready to Gear Up as Suga Completes Military Service
Embed from Getty ImagesAhead of his official discharge date (June 21, 2025), Suga quietly wrapped up his military service as a social service agent by taking an early day off. With that, the last remaining member of BTS has completed their enlistment — and the long-awaited moment of BTS reuniting as one is finally here. We’ll see how things unfold from here. 🥸
👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s thoughts: Honestly, it was smart move by HYBE and Suga to keep things quiet, especially in light of the shocking DUI incident last August. This wasn’t just a “my fave got a DUI” moment — it was more like “OMG, him?!” BTS has always had such a squeaky-clean, respectful image, so the news hit harder than most. (Thankfully, no one was hurt.)
He ended up with a fine of about $11,000. And while his global fanbase is still massive and loyal, let’s be real — public opinion, especially in Korea, isn’t exactly warm right now. 😒
2️⃣ Animated Movie Kpop Demon Hunters Slays Netflix Charts
Move over! There’s a new Kpop King & Queen on Netflix!
The animated Netflix movie is currently on everyone’s radar as it is currently dominating the Netflix movie charts — hitting #1 in 26 countries (including the US, Singapore, and much of Europe) as of June 23, 2025. 🤩🥳
The movie is produced by Sony Pictures Animation (known for Spider-verse and Hotel Transylvania) and is helmed by Korean-Canadian director Maggie Kang and director Chris Appelhans.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation (of Spider-Verse and Hotel Transylvania fame), the film is co-directed by Korean-Canadian Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. The story draws from Kang’s childhood memories of 1st-gen K-pop and evolved into a full-fledged movie. The directors took inspiration from top groups like BTS, Blackpink, TXT, Stray Kids, Ateez, Monsta X, and Twice. The character visuals are even modeled after celebs like Cha Eun-woo and Nam Joo-hyuk.
👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s Thoughts: To be honest, I haven’t had the chance to watch it yet. Confession of an almost 40 year old woman (lol) – while I used to enjoy animation as a kid, I’m not that into it as an adult. But now that I see so many positive reviews about the movie, I might give it a try. Fun fact: I actually worked on an animated series that has a similar story and concept… but alas, it never made it on screen because of internal company drama. 🥲 Any-hoo, get ready for my review of the movie this week!
3️⃣ Another Classic Set to Return? John Cho and Kal Penn Possibly Attached to Harold & Kumar 4
Embed from Getty ImagesBrace yourself for another crazy adventure—because the 2000s classic Harold & Kumar might be making a comeback! 😝
According to a Variety article published on June 17, 2025, a fourth movie from the cult classic franchise is currently in the works.
On the production side, it’s already been confirmed that the original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (yep, the same duo behind Cobra Kai) are set to direct. They’ll also be writing the screenplay with Josh Heald. The film will be produced by Mandate Pictures, a Lionsgate-owned company. No release date has been announced yet—but now that I think about it, it’s probably because they’re still deep in the writing phase.
Now, onto casting: the exciting part! There’s buzz that John Cho and Kal Penn are very likely to reprise their roles, although nothing has been finalized. No updates yet on whether Neil Patrick Harris is returning or who else might be joining the cast.
👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s Thoughts:
Okay, confession: I never actually got around to watching Harold & Kumar when it came out. I was a high school teen who had zero interest in a drug-fueled buddy comedy, and once I moved to Korea for university, the movie sort of slipped off my radar. 🙃
But let’s be real—if you were around back then, just the name Harold & Kumar is iconic. Even people like me, who never actually watched it, know about it.
That said, I am curious to see how they’ll pull it off. Because let’s be frank: movies from that era were hilarious, but also kind of offensive.🤓 And these days, Hollywood’s pretty cautious about crossing the line in the name of political correctness. I just hope the people behind it can find a way to stay true to what made the originals fun, without watering it down too much. Finding that balance is the real challenge.🫠
