There’s a new sharp-suited spy in town, and let’s just say… he’s bringing the heat. 🔥

On July 15, Prime Video released the official trailer for much anticipated spy-thriller “Butterfly”. Daniel Dae Kim not only stars in the series, but also serves as an executive producer. He has also recently and proudly been the first Asian to be nominated as ‘Best Lead Actor in a Play‘. 🤗

The series had caught attention early on in Korea for the collaboration between top Korean actors and Hollywood production. Korean cast members include Park Hae-soo, who is most famous for “Squid Game 1”, .Kim Tae-hee, long regarded as one of Korea’s most beautiful actresses and finally Kim Ji-hun, who seems to star as an assassin in the series.

When the trailer dropped, fans have expressed excitement for other reasons. One, the background music for the trailer is none other than J-hope’s ‘What If’, which was released back in 2022 on his debut solo album. Two, fans are just praising how Daniel Dae Kim looks so young and has a great skin. Asian advantage here! 🤭

Anyways… let’s get into my thoughts about the trailer:

🎬 Watch the trailer here:

Plot Summary (Based on the Trailer):

“Butterfly” seems to be about David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim) was once a top spy who went into hiding to protect his daughter, Rebecca. After presumed dead, Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) trained to be the next big spy. The duo reunite when David comes out of hiding and together they join forces to fight back against their boss, who is trying to eliminate the spy duo as they are aware of her dark secrets. Of course, Rebecca is standoffish to David as she felt betrayed by David for lying to her all these years – so they are not exactly on close terms.

👩🏻🍵 Kayla’s Thoughts:

Watching the trailer, the story reminded me so much of another similar show: Netflix’s Fubar. Mainly from the fact that a) it is a father-daughter spy duo and b) they were not aware of each other’s activity as a spy.

The only difference? That a) the daughter thought father was dead and b) they are Asian characters. Still, it is an exciting news to see an Asian version of ‘Daddy and Daughter’ spy duo working together. As Asian representation although growing in recent years, is still not common in Hollywood, I’m excited to see what Daniel Dae Kim will bring to the screen. I imagine they will be exploring father and daughter relationship from an Asian perspective somewhat sarcastically and awkwardly humorous, if you get the gist. 😉

The series consists only of six episodes, so it looks like it’s jam packed with action and humor and family love- all without any wasted storylines. (Thank god!)

Other Q’s I have:

  • Why does David say to his daugter, “You used to love those“, particularly the Honeybutter Popcorn? (around 0:30′) 🤔 Uhm… hello? That chips was first introduced in 2021, yet if she supposedly lost her dad when she was a child… It’s only been about 3 to 4 years… that timeline def. don’t add up!
  • Is Kim Tae-hee David’s wife or lover? If she’s the wife… Rebecca doesn’t appear to be fully Korean (according to the actress’s bio, she’s half Japanese, half American)… so I guess Kim Tae-hee isn’t the mother of Rebecca?
  • I wonder if Daniel wil have lines in Korean, seeing that some of the setting is in Korea. I just remeber that in his “Lost” days, he had horrible Korean accents that I could barely understand him. But if he doesn’t speak in Korean, how will he be able to navigate Korea? I hope that at the least, he practiced his Korean.

“Butterfly” will be release on August 13 on Prime Video, so hopefully by then, my questions will be answered.

Did I miss anything? Or am I just overthinking the popcorn? 😅 Drop your thoughts (and theories) in the comments below! 👇
